Chapter Thirteen

“What was that about?”

“Uh, no—nothing.” Jackson stammered and shuffled his feet uncomfortably. He loved his cousins like they were his brothers, but honestly, those two were as tactful as a herd of stampeding buffalo.

A gust of wind blew through hard enough to make the flames in the fire pit dance and flicker. Jackson smothered the fire, making sure that there were no remaining embers that could ignite a forest fire.

Taylor shivered in the cold, though he tried to hide it. Even though it was the middle of summer, the nights up in the mountains were still cold compared to the valley and the temperature often dipped down into the low forties.

Jackson pulled him close, sharing the warmth that radiated from his body. His inner polar bear kept his metabolism running like a furnace, driving off the worst chills. “Come on, it’s getting late. Let’s head in.”

Taylor followed Jackson off the deck and they walked hand in hand along the stone path that led to Jackson’s side of the lodge. Taylor’s fingers were like icicles. Jackson frowned. He grabbed both of Taylor’s ice cold hands and rubbed them briskly with his own before cupping them in a cocoon of warmth. “Better?”

Taylor nodded and it was only with his enhanced vision that Jackson saw the pink across his cheeks. “Yeah, much better.”

Jackson looked down at their linked hands and his heart, already bursting with happiness that his family and mate accepted each other, skipped a beat. “We’re almost there. I’ll put on a fire and get something warm into you.”

Once inside his suite, Jackson busied himself with building a fire in his stone fireplace as promised. He ushered Taylor over to the plush leather couch facing the fire and draped a warm wool throw over his shivering body.

Jackson rarely invited anyone else into his private sanctuary, and he was sure that his mate could feel the nervous energy radiating off of him. He had to do something before he embarrassed himself. “How about some hot cocoa?”

“That sounds perfect,” said Taylor with a bemused look.

His nerves were still sparking, but after five minutes of tinkering in the kitchen, Jackson was as calm as he was going to get. He breathed a deep breath and brought the two steaming hot mugs out to the living room.

A wide smile spread across Taylor’s lips at the scent of the rich chocolate and the sight of the melting marshmallows floating on top of the tall mug. He took a careful sip and then licked at the chocolate and marshmallow froth that clung to his lip. “Mmm… This is delicious. I love homemade hot chocolate.”

Jackson was ecstatic, filled with pride at his mate’s approval, and he must have looked it. He nodded in agreement. “The store bought stuff can’t compare to the real thing.”

Taylor laughed and shifted on the couch, throwing back the blanket and making room for him. Jackson sank down and pulled Taylor close to him, resting one arm over Taylor’s shoulders. The two men basked in front of the fire, wrapped around each other like a protective blanket.
